Chapter 23 - THE LETTER FROM MARACatherine kept Mara’s letter locked in a drawer.
She had read it more than twenty times.
But one sentence continued to trouble her.
Richard ordered the trial, but he did not order the crash.
There was another truth hidden inside the letter.
Mara had written that someone had accessed the laboratory after the twins were taken.
Someone had changed the medical records.
Someone had erased the original data.
Catherine went to the police.
The investigators searched the evidence recovered from the estate.
Then they discovered something.
The black drive stolen by Vivian had not contained financial information.
It contained the original trial data.
And one encrypted file.
The file had been created by Mara.
The password was unknown.
Catherine showed it to Noah.
He stared at the screen.
“Do you know the password?”
Noah shook his head.
Then he remembered something.
His mother had always told him the same sentence before bed.
“Never forget the first place you felt safe.”
Noah typed one word.
HOME.
The file opened.
Inside was a video.
Mara appeared on screen.
She looked exhausted.
And afraid.
“If you are watching this,” she said, “then Vivian Cross has already betrayed Richard.”

Catherine froze.
The mystery had just become much bigger.
