Chapter 22 - THE TWINS TAKE THEIR FIRST STEPThe doctors had warned everyone not to expect miracles.

Ethan and Eliza had spent years receiving treatment that had masked the truth.
Their bodies had not been permanently destroyed.
But recovery would be slow.
Painful.
And uncertain.
For the first few days, neither twin wanted to try.
Ethan was afraid of failing.
Eliza was afraid of remembering.
Then one morning, Noah entered the rehabilitation room.
He carried a small wooden chair.
“What is that?” Ethan asked.
“A chair.”
“We can see that.”
Noah placed it in front of them.
“Then stand.”
Ethan stared at him.
Eliza frowned.
“That’s your motivational speech?”
“No.”
“What is it?”
Noah shrugged.
“Just stand.”
Ethan laughed for the first time in years.
The therapists helped him rise.
His legs trembled.
His knees shook.
For three seconds, he stood.
Then he sat down.
Everyone applauded.
Ethan looked embarrassed.
Noah simply nodded.
“Tomorrow, try four seconds.”
Eliza looked at him.
“And me?”
Noah turned toward her.
“You’ll try five.”
She smiled.
“Why five?”
May you like
“Because you complained more.”
For the first time since the accident, the twins laughed together.
