He searched the old basement.
The place had already been examined by police.
But Noah noticed something nobody else had.
A line in the floor.
A hidden door.
Behind it was a small laboratory.
Richard had never known it existed.
Catherine stared at the room.
“Your father built this?”
Noah shook his head.
“My mother did.”
Inside were old computers.
Medical equipment.
Boxes of documents.
And dozens of photographs.
The photographs showed children.
The thirty-seven children.
Noah looked at the walls.
Mara had been documenting everything.
She had not abandoned them.
She had been trying to save them.
Then Noah found a final photograph.
It showed Mara holding him as a baby.
Behind her stood a man.
Richard.
But Richard had never mentioned this photograph.
Noah turned around.
Richard was standing in the doorway.
He looked at the image.
His face went pale.
“I remember that day.”
Noah stared at him.
“Then why did you say you didn't know me?”
