Chapter 32 - Sarah's ConfessionSarah revealed that Clara had once given her a key.
A tiny brass key.
She had kept it hidden because Clara told her:
“If Mark ever learns the truth too soon, they will kill him.”
Mark stared at the key.
“What does it open?”
Sarah shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Ethan recognized it.
“The red room.”
They returned upstairs.
The key opened a hidden drawer inside Clara's old desk.
Inside was a single cassette tape.
Mark played it.
Clara's voice emerged.
“If you found this, Sarah kept her promise.”
Mark looked at Sarah.
Clara continued.
“The person you are searching for is not outside the family.”
A pause.
“He is inside it.”
Then another voice appeared.
A male voice.
Mark froze.
He recognized it immediately.
His own voice.
But Mark had never recorded that conversation.
Clara's final words were:
May you like
“Mark, if you hear yourself confessing to my murder…”
The tape stopped.
