Chapter 22 - NoahThe investigation led them to an orphanage in another state.

Noah was now thirteen.
He had Clara's eyes.
Mark knew immediately.
The boy looked at him suspiciously.
“Who are you?”
Mark struggled to answer.
“Your mother's husband.”
Noah froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
Noah stared.
“She told me my mother died.”
Mark's voice cracked.
“She did.”
Noah looked at him.
“Then why are you here?”
Mark showed him Clara's photograph.
Noah touched it carefully.
“She came to see me once.”
“When?”
“Every year.”
Mark stared.
“Why didn't she tell me?”
Noah shrugged.
“She said she was protecting you.”
Then Noah asked:
“Is Lily okay?”
Mark froze.
“How do you know Lily?”
Noah looked confused.
“She told me about her.”
“Who?”
Noah's face changed.
May you like
“Victoria.”
Mark's blood ran cold.
