“What?”
Miller repeated:
“Victoria escaped during transport.”
“How?”
“We don't know.”
Ethan looked at Mark.
“What happened?”
“Victoria escaped.”
Ethan's face became expressionless.
“She didn't escape.”
Mark stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
“She was released.”
“By whom?”
Ethan looked toward Arthur.
Arthur slowly shook his head.
“No.”
Ethan said:
“Check the transport records.”
Mark called Miller back.
“Detective, check who authorized Victoria's transfer.”
A pause.
Then Miller answered.
“Already did.”
“And?”
“The authorization came from a federal liaison.”
Mark frowned.
“Name?”
Miller hesitated.
“Eleanor Vance.”
Mark's blood ran cold.
His mother.
Alive.
And now officially involved.
Miller continued.
“Mark, there's something else.”
“What?”
“We found a vehicle abandoned near the facility.”
“Whose?”
“Victoria's.”
“Is she inside?”
“No.”
“What did you find?”
Miller lowered his voice.
“Her phone.”
Mark stared at Ethan.
“Anything on it?”
“Yes.”
Miller paused.
“A photograph.”
“What photograph?”
“The Vance estate.”
Mark's stomach dropped.
“Taken when?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
Sarah immediately looked toward the windows.
“Someone is watching the house.”
The lights flickered.
Lily grabbed Mark's hand.
