Chapter 11 - The Black SedanMark rushed toward the window.

A black sedan was parked across the road.
Its headlights were off.
Ethan moved beside him.
“Don't go outside.”
Mark looked at him.
“Who is it?”
“Someone who wants you to know they're there.”
Sarah pulled the curtains closed.
Lily whispered:
“Daddy?”
Mark turned.
She was holding Clara's old photograph.
“Mommy used to say that when people hide in the dark, it's because they don't want you to see their faces.”
Mark crouched beside her.
“Your mother was right.”
Then Ethan noticed something.
The photograph Lily was holding had writing on the back.
He took it.
His eyes widened.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was in Mommy's drawer.”
Ethan turned it over.
Written in Clara's handwriting:
If Eleanor returns, find the red room.
Mark frowned.
“What red room?”
Ethan stared at him.
“The room your father never let us enter.”
Arthur slowly stood.
“There is no red room.”
Ethan looked at him.
“There was.”
Mark suddenly remembered something from childhood.
A locked door.
At the end of the east corridor.
His father had always called it:
“Private.”
Mark turned toward the hallway.
“It's still there.”
Ethan nodded.
“Then that's where we go.”
But before they could move—
The front door unlocked itself.

Everyone froze.
The handle slowly turned.
