Police vehicles were stationed outside.
Cameras were replaced.
Every entrance was locked.
Yet the threat felt closer than ever.
Lily couldn't sleep.
She sat beside Mark on the couch.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Mommy's family bad?”
Mark looked at her.
“No.”
“Then why does everyone keep hurting us?”
Mark didn't have an answer.
He pulled her close.
“Because sometimes good people trust the wrong people.”
Across the room, Sarah watched them.
She quietly walked toward the kitchen.
Her phone vibrated.
One message appeared.
YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.
Sarah froze.
A second message:
TELL MARK WHAT YOU KNOW.
Sarah looked toward the living room.
She had been hiding something.
For three months.
Something Clara had told her before she died.
Sarah finally walked back toward Mark.
“Mr. Vance…”
