Chapter 9 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE WAREHOUSEThe police searched the warehouse.

They found a hidden staircase.
It led beneath the building.
The room below contained files.
Photographs.
Financial records.
And a wall covered with pictures of my family.
Sophie.
Me.
My parents.
My brother.
Preston.
The photographs had been taken over several years.
Someone had been watching us long before the wedding.
Detective Morales found a folder with my name.
Inside was a timeline.
My marriage.
Sophie’s birth.
My aunt Eleanor’s disappearance.
And one sentence:
THE MOTHER MUST REMAIN UNAWARE.
I stared at it.
“Unaware of what?”
Daniel pointed to another folder.
It contained the name:
PROJECT ELEANOR.
Inside was a photograph of my aunt.
Alive.
The photograph had been taken only six months earlier.
My breath caught.
My aunt had not disappeared.
She had been hiding.
Or someone had been hiding her.
Then I found a recent photograph.
Eleanor was standing beside the scarred man.
On the back was written:
THE GIRL IS THE KEY.
I looked at Sophie.

My daughter was not just connected to the trust.
She was connected to something much larger.
