Chapter 12 - THE GOLDEN SON BREAKSThe scarred man escaped before the police arrived.
But he left something behind.
A phone.
It contained one video.
My brother David was sitting in a chair.
His face was bruised.
A man stood behind him.
The scarred man.
“You have until sunrise,” he said.
David looked into the camera.
“I’m sorry.”
The video ended.
I felt sick.
My brother had betrayed us.
But he had also been trapped.
I found him at an abandoned parking garage.
He was barely conscious.
When he saw me, he began to cry.
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You helped them.”
“I know.”
“What did you tell them?”
“Everything.”
I stepped back.
He lowered his head.
“I told them where Mom kept the key.”
“And where Sophie went.”
“I didn’t know they would hurt her.”
I stared at him.
“You always say that after the damage is done.”
David looked at me.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
He whispered:
“Dad ordered the first plan.”
I felt my heart break.

“The one that started before the wedding.”
