Chapter 3 - MY FATHER’S SECOND LIEMy father arrived at the hospital before midnight.

He did not come alone.

Preston’s lawyer was with him.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was the way my father avoided looking at me.

“You need to come home,” he said.

I stood beside Sophie’s bed.

“No.”

His face hardened.

“You are making this worse.”

“My daughter was hurt.”

“She was involved in an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

I stared at him.

“You watched Preston plant the phone.”

The lawyer’s expression changed.

My father remained silent.

I took out my phone.

“I saw the footage.”

For the first time, his face went pale.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked toward Sophie.

“She was never supposed to be hurt.”

The room became silent.

I stepped closer.

“What was supposed to happen?”

He did not answer.

My mother entered the room.

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Enough.”

I turned toward her.

“You knew?”

She closed the door behind her.

“Your father made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

She looked at Sophie.

“She was supposed to be embarrassed. Nothing more.”

I felt something inside me break.

My father had known.

My mother had known.

And both of them had stood there while my daughter was publicly accused.

I lowered my voice.

“Why?”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Preston believed you had something.”

“What?”

She looked at my father.

My father shook his head.

But my mother finally said it.

“Your daughter is the legal beneficiary of a trust.”

I stared at her.

“What trust?”

May you like

My father whispered:

“The one your aunt created before she disappeared.”
