Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN THE GREEN DRESSVanessa did not look like a kidnapper.
She looked terrified.
Sophie ran toward me.
I dropped to my knees and held her tightly.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Did she hurt you?”
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
“She gave me water.”
Vanessa raised both hands.
“I never intended to harm her.”
I stood.
“Then why did you take her?”
“Because someone else was coming.”
“Who?”
Vanessa looked toward the warehouse entrance.
“Preston.”
I froze.
“He ordered you to take her?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Because Preston is not the person you should fear.”
Before she could explain, headlights appeared outside.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“We have to leave.”
Detective Morales shouted from the entrance.
“Police!”
Vanessa stepped back.
“I’m not your enemy.”
I stared at her.
“Then prove it.”
She pulled a photograph from her pocket.
It showed my father standing beside a man I had never seen before.
The man had a scar across his face.
