He opened the door.
No one was there.
Only an envelope lay on the carpet.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Sophie walking into school.
The picture had been taken that morning.
My hands began to shake.
Someone was watching my daughter.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“When was this taken?”
“Today.”
He immediately called hotel security.
I called the police.
Then another message appeared on my phone.
THE TRUST BELONGS TO THE FAMILY.
I stared at it.
A second message followed.
DON’T MAKE US TAKE IT FROM YOU.
My blood ran cold.
The trust was not just about money.
Someone believed Sophie had access to something.
Something worth threatening an eight-year-old child.
Daniel looked at me.
“You need protection.”
“I need answers.”
“You can have both.”
He took the photograph.
“Who knew about the trust?”
“My parents.”
“Anyone else?”
I thought about the wedding.
Preston.
Lauren.
David.
My brother.
I remembered the way David had avoided me.
The way he had disappeared before the police arrived.
I called him.
No answer.
Then his phone sent a message.
I DIDN’T KNOW THEY WOULD HURT HER.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel read the message.
“Who is David?”
“My brother.”
The phone buzzed again.
