Chapter 7 - WHAT MY MOTHER TOOKThe warehouse was empty.

Too empty.
The doors were unlocked.
The lights were on.
But there was no sign of Sophie.
I found the red envelope on a metal table.
The brass key was gone.
In its place was a note.
YOU BROUGHT THE WRONG KEY.
I called my mother.
She answered immediately.
“What happened?”
“Where is the real key?”
Silence.
“Mom?”
She began to cry.
“I took it.”
“Why?”
“Because Eleanor trusted me.”
My hands tightened.
“What did she trust you with?”
“The money.”
I stared at the empty warehouse.
My mother explained that Eleanor had discovered financial fraud inside the family company.
She had created a trust to protect the money.
The beneficiary was Sophie.
But the key to the trust had been divided into two parts.
One part was hidden with Eleanor.
The other was given to my mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father was being watched.”
“By whom?”
My mother whispered:
“Everyone.”
Then a sound came from behind me.
I turned.
A door at the back of the warehouse slowly opened.
And Sophie stepped out.
May you like
She was holding the missing key.
Behind her stood Vanessa Cole.
