Chapter 19 - MY MOTHER’S VERSION OF MERCYThe clinic in Switzerland was heavily guarded.

Eleanor was there.
Alive.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
When she saw me, she began to cry.
“You look like your mother.”
I sat beside her.
“Why did you disappear?”
She looked toward the window.
“Because I found out what they were doing.”
“Who?”
“The people behind the company.”
Eleanor explained that the trust had been created to protect employees.
The money had been stolen from them.
Her plan was to expose everyone.
But Margaret found out.
Eleanor was forced into hiding.
My father knew.
My mother knew.
And both had stayed silent.
I looked at her.
“Why did you choose Sophie?”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“Because your daughter was innocent.”
I did not understand.
She continued:
“The trust could only be opened when Sophie became an adult.”
“Unless someone tried to take control of it.”
“That was the plan at the wedding.”
I felt cold.
“They wanted custody of Sophie.”
May you like
Eleanor nodded.
“And they wanted you to look unstable.”
