Chapter 18 - WHERE GRANDMA RUTH KEPT WINTERMy mother finally told me the truth about Eleanor.

Eleanor had returned home once.

Years ago.

She had met my mother in secret.

But my mother had been afraid.

She had refused to help her.

Not because she wanted Eleanor to suffer.

Because Margaret had threatened me.

I had been a child.

My mother had believed silence would protect me.

Instead, it had allowed Eleanor to disappear again.

My mother had kept Eleanor's belongings in an old winter cabin.

The cabin had no electricity.

No internet.

No cameras.

Inside was a metal box.

The second half of Eleanor's records.

We found photographs.

Letters.

And one medical report.

Eleanor was alive.

But she had been seriously ill.

The last page contained a location.

A private clinic in Switzerland.

I looked at my mother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

She cried.

“Because I was afraid of losing you too.”

I hugged her.

But the truth still hurt.

Sometimes, love could become another kind of prison.
