Chapter 4 - THE BRIDAL SUITE SAFEMy aunt Eleanor had disappeared before I was born.

According to my family, she had left the country.
According to my mother, she had been afraid.
I had never asked too many questions.
Now I wished I had.
The next morning, I returned to the Whitmore Hotel.
Daniel Cho was waiting for me near the elevators.
“You shouldn’t be here alone.”
“I need to see the bridal suite.”
His expression became serious.
“Why?”
“My mother told me there was a trust.”
Daniel stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“The bridal suite was accessed three times before the ceremony.”
“By whom?”
“Preston. Your father. And someone using a master key.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
We entered the suite.
The room looked untouched.
Except for the safe.
The door was slightly open.
Inside was a red envelope.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
There was a brass key.
And a note.
THE FIRST DOOR IS NOT THE LAST.
I stared at the words.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“Do you know what it means?”
I shook my head.
Then my phone rang.
It was my mother.
“Where are you?”
“At the hotel.”
Her voice became tense.
“Leave immediately.”
“Why?”
“Because your father knows about the key.”
I looked toward the hallway.
A shadow moved beneath the door.
Then someone knocked.
Once.
Twice.

And a man’s voice said:
“Open the door.”
