Chapter 11 - GRANDMA RUTH’S LAST SECRETMy mother’s house had been searched.

The doors were open.
The furniture had been overturned.
But she was gone.
On the kitchen table was a single photograph.
My mother and Eleanor.
They were young.
Standing beside a locked metal box.
On the back, my mother had written:
SHE NEVER KNEW WHAT WAS INSIDE.
I stared at the words.
Then I realized something.
My mother had not stolen the key.
She had protected it.
For decades.
But she had never opened the box.
Daniel found a hidden compartment beneath the floor.
Inside was the second key.
And a letter from Eleanor.
Ruth, if they ever come for the key, give it to my niece. Not her father. Not the company. Her.
I read the sentence twice.
Then the lights went out.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Give us the key.”
I grabbed Sophie.
Daniel pulled his weapon.
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
The man with the scar.
He looked at me.

Then said:
“Your aunt sends her regards.”
