Chapter 8 - The Voice Behind the Wall

Maya could not speak.

Samuel continued.

“I have been waiting twenty-six years.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know how long I have.”

Maya’s heart pounded.

“Who has you?”

There was a pause.

“Your mother.”

Maya froze.

“What?”

“She is alive.”

The call ended.

Maya stared at the phone.

Frank looked horrified.

Arthur sat down heavily.

“Your mother is alive,” Maya whispered.

Frank shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“You knew my father.”

“I thought Samuel was dead.”

Maya turned toward Arthur.

“Did you know my mother was alive?”

Arthur’s silence answered her.

Maya slapped him.

The sound echoed through the apartment.

“You knew!”

Arthur accepted the blow without resistance.

“She made me promise.”

“To lie to me?”

“To protect you.”

Maya’s phone vibrated again.

A location appeared.

No message.

Just an address.

Frank recognized it immediately.

“The old Bell estate.”

Arthur stood.

“That place was abandoned years ago.”

Maya grabbed her coat.

“Then why did someone send me there?”

Frank looked at the phone.

“Because someone wants you to find what your mother left behind.”

Outside, a black car stopped beneath the streetlight.

The same car Maya had seen parked near her apartment for three months.
