Chapter 29 - The Last Recording
The files spread across the world.
Names appeared.
Evidence appeared.
People who had hidden for decades began running.
Victor looked at Maya.
“You have no idea what you have started.”
Maya looked at him.
“For the first time, I know exactly what I’m doing.”
The mansion shook as police vehicles surrounded the property.
The gray-suited man attempted to escape.
Frank tackled him at the entrance.
Maya stared at Frank.
“You came.”
Frank smiled.
“You thought I would miss the ending?”
“This isn’t the ending.”
“No.”
Frank looked toward the laptop.
“Not yet.”
The final file opened.
Anna Reed appeared on the screen.
Maya’s biological mother.
Anna looked directly into the camera.
“If Maya is watching this, then I am dead.”
Maya held her breath.
Anna continued.
“I built the Circle because I believed power was the only way to protect people.”
She paused.
“Then I became the monster I was fighting.”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
Anna looked down.
“I did not abandon you.”
The video suddenly glitched.
A second voice appeared.
A man whispered:
“Anna, they found us.”
Anna turned toward the camera.
“If you want to know who killed me, look at the person who has protected you the longest.”
The screen went black.
