Chapter 21 - The Final Witness

The hospital erupted into chaos.
Lights flickered.
Doors locked automatically.
Liam looked at Maya.
“They found us.”
Samuel grabbed the laptop.
“We have to leave.”
“Who is the final witness?”
Samuel looked at her.
“You.”
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t know anything.”
“You remember.”
“What?”
“Something from when you were six.”
Maya’s mind filled with fragments.
A red door.
Her mother crying.
A man shouting.
A silver lighter.
And a voice saying:
“Don’t let her remember.”
Maya pressed her hands against her temples.
The memories came faster.
She saw Victor.
She saw Arthur.
She saw her father.
And someone else.
A woman standing behind them.
Maya whispered:
“There was another woman.”
Samuel froze.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
Liam opened the hospital door.
A woman stood in the corridor.
Maya recognized her face.
She had seen it in the photographs.
The woman smiled.
“My name is Clara Bell.”
Samuel raised his weapon.
Maya stared.
“Who is she?”
Samuel whispered:
“Victor’s wife.”
Clara smiled.
May you like
“And your mother’s best friend.”
Then she locked the hospital doors from the outside.
