Chapter 17 - The Man on the Phone
Maya answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Her father’s voice.
The real Samuel.
“Maya, get out of the car.”
She looked at the man beside her.
Daniel Reed.
The impostor.
He reached for the phone.
Maya pulled away.
“Who are you?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was your father’s closest friend.”
“Where is he?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Your mother knows.”
The call ended.
Maya stepped out of the car.
Daniel did not stop her.
A second vehicle pulled up beside them.
Frank stepped out.
He had followed them.
“Maya!”
She ran toward him.
Daniel remained inside the car.
Frank pointed his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Daniel raised both hands.
“I’m not your enemy.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“I protected her.”
Maya stared at him.
“Everyone says that.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because it is true.”
Then he removed a photograph from his pocket.
It showed Elizabeth standing beside another man.
The real Samuel.
But the date on the photograph was from only six months ago.
Maya’s heart stopped.
Her father was alive.
