Chapter 7 - The Father She Never Knew

“Don’t open it,” Frank said.

Maya stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because whoever left it wants you to.”

She opened the envelope anyway.

Inside was a photograph.

A man stood beside Elizabeth.

Maya recognized him immediately.

The resemblance was undeniable.

The same eyes.

The same crooked smile.

The same scar above the eyebrow.

On the back of the photograph was a name.

“Samuel Carter.”

Maya’s father.

She had spent her entire life believing he had died before she was born.

But the photograph was dated five years after her birth.

Maya looked at Frank.

“You knew him.”

Frank remained silent.

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“Is he dead?”

Frank looked at Arthur.

Arthur answered.

“No.”

Maya felt the room tilt.

“Where is he?”

Frank’s voice became barely audible.

“Inside Victor Bell’s private security facility.”

Maya stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel was the only person who knew where your mother hid the ledger.”

Maya took a step backward.

Her entire life had been built on lies.

Then the phone rang.

The caller ID displayed:

“Samuel Carter.”

Maya answered.

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a man whispered:

“Maya?”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

May you like

The voice trembled.

“My daughter.”
