Chapter 6 - The Name on the Wall

Maya refused to believe it.
“You’re saying the man who owns this restaurant has been watching me since I was a child?”
Arthur nodded.
“He believed your mother stole something from him.”
“What?”
“A ledger.”
Frank locked the apartment door.
“What kind of ledger?”
Arthur looked at Maya.
“The kind that could destroy powerful people.”
Maya’s phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
“THE LEDGER IS UNDER THE RESTAURANT.”
Maya stared at the screen.
Frank swore under his breath.
Arthur stood.
“We have to go.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor will know the phone is with you.”
Maya looked at the old man.
“Why would he care about a phone that belonged to your dead son?”
Arthur’s voice lowered.
“Because Daniel discovered the truth.”
“And then he died.”
Arthur said nothing.
Maya suddenly understood.
“You think he was murdered.”
Arthur looked away.
Before anyone could speak, the lights flickered back on.
The apartment was silent.
Then Maya noticed something on the floor.
A small white envelope had been pushed beneath the door.
On the front were four words.
“ASK FRANK ABOUT YOUR FATHER.”

Maya slowly turned around.
Frank was already reaching for the door.
