Chapter 20 - The Truth in the Files

Samuel entered the room.

Maya could barely look at him.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always say that.”

Samuel accepted the accusation.

Liam handed him the memory card.

Samuel connected it to a laptop.

The files opened.

Names appeared.

Politicians.

Police officers.

Business owners.

Judges.

Then Maya saw one name.

Her mother.

Elizabeth Carter.

Maya stared.

“Why is Mom on this list?”

Samuel’s face turned pale.

“She was working undercover.”

“For Victor?”

“No.”

“For the government.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

Elizabeth had spent twenty-six years hiding not only from Victor.

She had been hiding from the people who had hired her.

Samuel opened the final file.

A video appeared.

Elizabeth was younger.

She sat across from Victor Bell.

“You promised to protect my daughter.”

Victor smiled.

“I promised to protect her from everyone except myself.”

The video ended.

Maya looked at Samuel.

“What does this mean?”

Samuel closed the laptop.

“It means your mother did not disappear because Victor forced her to.”

Maya’s heart shattered.

“She chose to leave.”

Samuel shook his head.

“She chose to disappear because she had become dangerous.”

Then every phone in the hospital room began ringing at the same time.
