Clara aimed at Samuel.
Maya stepped between them.
“Wait.”
Samuel stared at her.
“You have to believe me.”
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
Clara lowered the weapon.
“Then ask your mother.”
They drove to Victor’s estate.
The gates opened automatically.
Inside, the mansion was silent.
Maya entered alone.
At the end of the hallway stood Elizabeth.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Maya approached slowly.
“Did Dad kill you?”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No.”
“Did he betray you?”
“Yes.”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then why protect him?”
Elizabeth looked toward the stairs.
“Because he was not the worst person in this family.”
Maya followed her gaze.
A man stepped into the room.
Victor Bell.
But he was not holding a weapon.
He looked defeated.
“Your mother is telling the truth,” Victor said.
Maya stared at him.
“Where is Daniel?”
Victor looked at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth whispered:
“Daniel is my son.”
Maya froze.
The phone slipped from her hand.
Victor continued.
“And your brother Liam is not your brother.”
Maya stopped breathing.
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Maya, there is something you need to know.”

Then every secret she had ever believed about her family collapsed.
