Chapter 22 - Clara’s Confession

Clara did not attack them.

She simply stood behind the glass.

“I know where Victor is,” she said.

Maya approached the door.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because I am the reason your mother disappeared.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“You betrayed Elizabeth.”

Clara’s smile vanished.

“I saved her.”

“You told Victor where she was.”

“To make him believe I had betrayed her.”

Clara looked at Maya.

“Your mother was working with me.”

Maya stared.

“Against Victor?”

“Against everyone.”

Clara explained that the ledger contained evidence of a secret organization called The Circle.

Victor was only one member.

The people above him had controlled businesses, police departments, and political campaigns for decades.

“They used your mother,” Clara said.

“Then they tried to erase her.”

Maya looked at the memory card.

“Why did she leave the phone for me?”

“Because she knew the Circle would eventually come for you.”

Clara opened the hospital door.

“Your mother is waiting.”

“Where?”

Clara looked toward the window.

“Inside Victor’s private estate.”

Maya stepped forward.

Then Clara whispered:

“But Victor is not the person you should fear.”

Maya stopped.

“Who is?”

May you like

Clara looked at Samuel.

“Your father.”
