Chapter 10 - The Man Who Knew Everything

The man holding Samuel was not Victor.
Maya recognized him from the restaurant.
He was the quiet dishwasher who had worked there for years.
Frank immediately reached for his weapon.
“Drop it,” the man said.
Frank froze.
Maya stared at him.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
“Someone who has been waiting for you to find the phone.”
Samuel looked at him.
“You promised she would be safe.”
“I promised nothing.”
The man pushed Samuel forward.
Maya noticed a small tattoo on his wrist.
A black crow.
Arthur saw it.
His face changed.
“The Raven Group.”
Maya looked between them.
“What is that?”
“A private network,” Arthur said. “They were hired to erase people.”
“People?”
“Witnesses.”
The dishwasher laughed.
“Your mother was one of them.”
Maya felt her blood run cold.
“Where is she?”
The man pointed toward a dark hallway.
“She was here.”
“Was?”
“She left a message for you.”
He threw a small metal box onto the floor.
Maya opened it.
Inside was a key.
And a note.
“THE TRUTH IS BURIED WHERE YOU FIRST LEARNED TO READ.”
Maya stared at the words.
Then she remembered.
Her old elementary school.
But before she could move, the man fired.
