Chapter 12 - The Ledger Was Alive

Maya stared at Arthur.

“You said you didn’t have it.”

“I said I didn’t know where it was.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

Arthur placed the ledger on the table.

It was not a book.

It was a small black drive.

“This contains names, payments, recordings, and evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Arthur looked at Samuel.

“Everything Victor Bell did.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Not everything.”

Maya looked at him.

“What is missing?”

“Your mother’s final recording.”

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“Victor took it.”

“Where?”

Samuel answered.

“Inside the restaurant.”

Maya suddenly understood.

The phone.

The recording.

The hidden room.

The restaurant had never been a random place where she worked.

Her mother had chosen it.

Frank looked at Maya.

“Your mother arranged for you to work there.”

Maya stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because she knew one day the truth would return.”

A car engine roared outside.

Arthur looked through the window.

Black vehicles surrounded the school.

Victor’s men had found them.

Samuel grabbed Maya’s arm.

“We have minutes.”

Maya held the drive tightly.

Then the phone rang.

The caller was Victor Bell.

He said only four words.

“Bring me my ledger.”
