Chapter 11 - The School Beneath the School
Frank pulled Maya behind a table.
Arthur dragged Samuel toward the back door.
The gunman disappeared.
They escaped through the woods.
By sunrise, they were standing outside Maya’s old elementary school.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Maya held the key.
“Where did you learn to read?” Frank asked.
“The old library.”
Inside, dust covered the shelves.
Maya walked toward the children's section.
One book stood out.
A red-covered storybook.
She pulled it free.
A hidden compartment opened behind the shelf.
Inside was a small metal box.
The key fit perfectly.
Maya opened it.
There was a letter.
Elizabeth’s handwriting.
“My daughter,
If you found this, then Samuel is alive, and Victor knows everything.”
Maya read faster.
“The ledger is not a book. It is a person.”
She stopped.
Frank stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
The letter continued.
“The person who carries the truth has been beside you all along.”
Maya slowly turned.
Frank’s face had gone pale.
“You know who it is.”
Frank looked away.
Maya whispered:
“Who?”
Before he could answer, a voice came from the doorway.
“Me.”
