Maya turned toward her father.
“What did you do?”
Samuel kept his eyes on the road.
“Your mother believed I betrayed her.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed Maya.
Samuel continued.
“I gave Victor the location of the ledger.”
“Why?”
“Because he had you.”
Maya stared at him.
“I was six.”
“He threatened to kill you.”
“So you gave him my mother?”
“I thought I could save both of you.”
“But you couldn’t.”
Samuel’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“No.”
The car stopped at a red light.
Maya looked at him.
“Where is my mother?”
Samuel hesitated.
“She has been hiding.”
“From Victor?”
“From everyone.”
“Why?”
Samuel looked into the mirror.
“Because she knows who ordered the first disappearance.”
Maya frowned.
“What disappearance?”
Samuel whispered:
“Your father’s.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“I am not Samuel Carter.”
The light turned green.
But he did not move.
A car behind them honked.
Samuel slowly turned around.
“My real name is Daniel Reed.”
Maya stared at him.
Then the phone rang.
