Chapter 30 - The Protector
Maya stared at Frank.
He looked exhausted.
“Did you kill my mother?”
Frank shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why did she say to look at you?”
Frank walked toward the window.
“Because I was the last person to see her alive.”
Maya’s heart pounded.
“What happened?”
“Your mother asked me to protect you.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew she was going to die.”
“Who killed her?”
Frank looked at Victor.
Victor lowered his head.
“I did not.”
Frank reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a final photograph.
Anna stood beside a young man.
Maya recognized him.
Daniel.
Her biological brother.
But Daniel was supposed to be dead.
Maya looked at the man standing beside Victor.
“Daniel?”
The man slowly stepped forward.
Victor stared at him.
“Impossible.”
Daniel removed a small device from his pocket.
The lights went out.
When they came back on, Daniel was gone.
So was the drive containing Anna’s confession.
Maya looked at the empty doorway.
Frank whispered:
“He was never dead.”
Maya stared into the darkness.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
“YOU FOUND THE TRUTH.”
A second message followed.
“NOW FIND ME.”
The sender was listed as:
ANNA REED.
And beneath it was a location.

A cemetery.
With a grave bearing Maya’s name.
