Chapter 31 - THE CALL FROM THE PRISON

At two o'clock on a rainy August morning, a sudden thunderstorm raged over the Connecticut coastline.

Lightning flashes illuminated the dark interior of Ethan's study, followed by heavy claps of thunder.

The black smartphone resting on Ethan's mahogany desk began to vibrate, its blue screen flashing brightly.

Ethan stepped into the room wearing his dark silk robe, picking up the device to check the caller ID.

The screen displayed an automated notification from the Connecticut State Department of Corrections.

Ethan answered the call, bringing the phone to his ear as he looked out the window at the storm.

"This is an automated security dispatch from Niantic Correctional Facility," an electronic voice stated.

"Inmate Chloe Miller was transferred to an off-site medical facility at midnight due to severe illness."

Ethan’s dark eyes narrowed as he heard the faint sound of a vehicle engine idling in his driveway outside.

Through the rain-slicked glass, a dark sedan sat parked at the iron gates, its headlights switching off—while a wet hand reached out from the backseat, holding a black smartphone that began ringing Ethan's phone again.
