Chapter 4 - THE ER WAITING ROOM

Sterile fluorescent lights buzzed overhead in the trauma center waiting room of Yale New Haven Hospital.
Ethan paced back and forth across the linoleum floor, his grey Henley shirt stained with dust from the living room rug.
His black smartphone vibrated violently in his pocket, displaying an incoming call from his mother-in-law, Eleanor.
Ethan answered the call, bringing the phone to his ear with a ice-cold composure.
"Ethan! What is wrong with you?! Chloe is calling me from a police station in tears!" Eleanor shrieked into the speaker.
"Your daughter kicked Clara in the stomach, Eleanor," Ethan replied, his deep voice deadly quiet and precise.
Silence hung on the other end of the line for three agonizing seconds before Eleanor spoke again.
"She... she was just emotional! You can't let her go to prison, Ethan! Drop the charges immediately!" Eleanor demanded.
"If anything happens to my wife or my child, Chloe will rot in federal prison," Ethan stated clearly before hanging up.
