Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT ANNA VANISHEDAnna told her mother everything.
Twenty years earlier, she had discovered that someone was stealing money from the family business.
She had found evidence.
But before she could expose the truth…
She was accused of stealing.
Her own father had believed the accusation.
Eleanor had been told that Anna had run away.
Then she had been told Anna was dead.
But Anna had never died.
She had escaped.
She had been pregnant with Lily.
And she had been afraid.
“Why didn't you come home?” Eleanor asked.
Anna looked down.
“Because someone threatened me.”
“Who?”
Anna remained silent.
Eleanor gently held her hand.
“Tell me.”
Anna looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Your husband.”
Eleanor froze.
Her husband had died several years earlier.
But Anna continued.
“He knew I had discovered the truth.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“That is impossible.”
Anna looked at her.
“He wasn't working alone.”
Eleanor felt the room spinning.
For twenty years, she had believed her daughter had abandoned her.
