Chapter 6 - THE ROOM ABOVE THE BAKERYThe neighborhood was old.

The buildings were crowded together.

People walked through narrow streets.

Eleanor had never been there before.

Lily led her to a small apartment above a bakery.

The stairs were dark.

The walls were cracked.

At the top, Lily stopped.

She looked nervous.

“Is your mother inside?”

Lily nodded.

Eleanor knocked.

No one answered.

Lily opened the door.

“Mom?”

A weak voice came from inside.

“Lily?”

The girl ran into the room.

Eleanor slowly followed.

A woman was lying on a narrow bed.

She was pale and extremely thin.

But the moment she looked at Eleanor…

Her eyes widened.

The room became completely silent.

Anna stared at her mother.

Eleanor stared at her daughter.

Neither moved.

Then Anna whispered:

“Mom?”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of searching.

Twenty years of grief.

And suddenly…

Her daughter was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Anna began to cry.

Eleanor walked toward her.

But stopped.

She was afraid Anna would reject her.

Then Anna reached out her hand.

May you like

Eleanor immediately took it.

And mother and daughter finally embraced.
