Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind The Documents

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But Marcus didn’t leave.

He stood in the center of the mansion, looking at the people around him.

People he had trusted.

People who had been hiding things.

Detective Sarah Collins walked inside.

“Marcus, I need everyone to stay here.”

Her eyes moved to Elena.

“And nobody touches anything.”

Elena looked offended.

“You think I did this?”

Sarah didn’t answer.

That made Elena uncomfortable.

Adrian handed over the documents.

“These are what she was trying to hide.”

Marcus opened the folder.

His expression changed.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Private accounts.

Names.

And one signature.

Elena’s.

Marcus looked up slowly.

“What is this?”

Elena didn’t speak.

Sarah answered.

“It appears someone has been moving money from the family foundation.”

Marcus looked at Elena.

“How long?”

She whispered.

“I can explain.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

The answer crushed him.

Six months.

Six months of lies.

“Why?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears again.

But this time…

Marcus didn’t know if they were real.

“I was trying to protect myself.”

“From what?”

She looked at Adrian.

And Adrian’s face changed.

Like he knew something.

Something bigger.

Elena lowered her voice.

“Because if Marcus knew the truth…”

She stopped.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What truth?”

She looked toward the dark hallway.

Then whispered:

“Adrian isn’t who you think he is.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Don’t.”

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you talking about?”

Elena smiled faintly.

A dangerous smile.

“Ask him why he came back after fifteen years.”

The room went silent.

Marcus turned toward Adrian.

And for the first time…

He wondered if he had been investigating the wrong person.
