Chapter 12 - The Man Who Controlled Everything

The lights came back on.
But the hallway was empty.
No one was there.
Marcus ran outside.
“Dad!”
Nothing.
Only silence.
Detective Sarah checked the security cameras.
“Someone entered through the underground passage.”
Marcus turned.
“Underground passage?”
Sarah nodded.
“This mansion has more secrets than we thought.”
Victor looked at Marcus.
“Now you understand.”
Marcus faced him.
“No. I understand that everyone lied to me.”
Victor didn’t argue.
Because he knew it was true.
Later that night, Marcus sat in his father’s old office.
The letter was still in his hand.
Elena stood at the doorway.
“Marcus.”
He didn’t look up.
“Why?”
She stayed quiet.
“Why did you help destroy my family?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
But Marcus didn’t move.
“I loved you.”
He looked at her.
“Don’t say that.”
“It was true.”
“Then why?”
Elena slowly walked inside.
“Because your father threatened me.”
Marcus froze.
“What?”
“He knew my past.”
She lowered her voice.
“He knew what I had done before I met you.”
Marcus stared.
“What did you do?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“I helped Victor disappear.”
The confession shocked him.
“Why?”
“Because I thought he deserved revenge.”
A tear rolled down her face.
“But I didn’t know your father had a bigger plan.”
Marcus stood.
“What plan?”
Before Elena could answer…
The mansion doors opened.
A man walked inside.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked at him.
His entire world stopped.
“Dad…”
His father looked at him.
“I’m sorry, Marcus.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Victor stepped forward.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
His father looked at him.
“You should have stayed dead.”
The tension exploded.
And Marcus realized the truth.

This was never about money.
