Chapter 34 - Elena’s Last Visit

Two years later Elena visited the ethics center.
She had been invited to speak about financial manipulation and self-deception.
Marcus attended quietly.
She told students, “The most dangerous lie I ever told was not to Marcus. It was telling myself I had no choice.”
Afterward they walked through the old living room.
She stared at the camera.
“Still there.”
“Yes.”
“I hated that thing.”
“I know.”
“It saved Adrian.”
“And exposed you.”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“I’m glad.”
Marcus believed her.
Elena was engaged.
Not to someone wealthy.
A public defender named James.
She seemed happy.
Marcus was happy for her.
Truly.
They stood where the table shattered.
“I’m sorry,” she said once more.
“I know.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“Yes.”
She cried.
“But?”
Marcus smiled.
“No but.”
Forgiveness did not restore marriage.
It did not erase damage.
It simply meant he no longer needed the wound to remain open.
They hugged.
Then Elena left.

Marcus watched without sadness.
Some endings were quiet because they were finally complete.
