Victor confessed one final secret.
He had helped Richard fake his death.

Marcus stared.
“Why tell me now?”
“Because I’m tired.”
“Everyone becomes honest when exhausted.”
Victor had believed Richard’s disappearance would give him access to hidden files.
Instead he became trapped.
He helped create documents.
Paid intermediaries.
Kept Marcus grieving.
“I thought the end justified it.”
Marcus laughed sadly.
“Family motto.”
Victor expected anger.
He got it.
Marcus did not speak to him for two months.
Then Victor entered therapy.
Real therapy.
Not secret investigations disguised as healing.
He moved to Boston.
Worked as an accountant for a nonprofit.
No authority over family money.
