Chapter 20 - The Blood in the Warehouse

The blood belonged to Victor.
Hospital staff confirmed it three hours later when he arrived at an emergency room twelve miles away with a deep cut across his shoulder and a concussion. He refused to say who attacked him until Marcus walked into the room.
“Catherine,” Victor said.
Marcus stared.
“A sixty-eight-year-old woman did this?”
“Not personally.”
“Who?”
“Daniel Vale.”
Rebecca’s maternal uncle.
Catherine’s younger brother.
A name Marcus had barely encountered in old records.
Victor explained that Daniel had managed Vale Heritage during Catherine’s disappearance. He believed Whitmore Enterprises belonged to the Vale family and had spent decades preparing legal and financial pressure.
“Why attack you?”
“Because I found records proving Catherine didn’t file the challenge.”
Marcus frowned.
“She admitted she did.”
“She signed it. Daniel prepared it.”
“Difference?”
“Big one.”
Victor had discovered Daniel was moving trust assets into shell entities before litigation. If the company were broken apart, Daniel would control acquisition vehicles positioned to buy distressed pieces cheaply.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“So the moral crusade has a commission.”
“Looks that way.”
“Does Catherine know?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Why write that he came for Elena?”
Victor looked toward the door.
“Because Elena has something Daniel needs.”
“What?”
“A confession.”
Marcus stared.
Elena once recorded Richard discussing Thomas Hale’s framing. But Victor believed there was another recording: Daniel Vale admitting he helped fabricate the documents used against Thomas.
“If Elena has that, Adrian’s father can be cleared completely.”
“Why would Daniel care now?”
“Because it proves he participated.”
Marcus called Elena.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Sarah checked her Philadelphia apartment.
Empty.
Security footage showed Elena leaving willingly with a man fitting Daniel’s description.
“Kidnapped?” Marcus asked.
“Maybe coerced.”
Then a message from Elena arrived.
DON’T COME AFTER ME. I CAN FIX THIS.
Marcus swore.
Sarah looked at him.
“You’re going after her.”
“Yes.”
“Of course.”
They traced Daniel’s vehicle south toward Maryland.
Rebecca insisted on coming.
Catherine did too.
Marcus refused both.
Catherine laughed.
“You do realize none of you can order me around anymore.”
“Apparently family resemblance survives questionable paternity.”
She almost smiled.
They went together.
A waterfront estate near Annapolis belonged to Vale Heritage.
Police approached quietly.
Inside they found Elena.
Alive.
Daniel stood across from her.
No weapons visible.
He was sixty-two, white-haired, controlled, and furious.
“You brought them,” he said.
Elena replied, “I told you I wouldn’t.”
Marcus entered with Sarah.
“You underestimate cameras.”
Daniel laughed.
“This family and cameras.”
Marcus looked at Elena.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Voluntary?”
“Mostly.”
“That is not a legal category.”
Sarah took over.
Daniel agreed to talk.
He admitted fabricating records against Thomas Hale under Richard’s direction.
Catherine stared at her brother.
“You told me Thomas was guilty.”
“He was going to expose us.”
“He was the father of my child.”
“He was going to destroy the Vale trust.”
Rebecca stood beside her mother, pale.
Daniel saw her.
“You should never have come back.”
Rebecca answered, “That seems to be the family motto.”
Elena held up a recorder.
Daniel’s entire admission had been captured.
Sarah almost smiled.
“Apparently everyone learns eventually.”
Daniel was arrested for assaulting Victor and for financial crimes within the trust.
Catherine collapsed into a chair.
Her revenge narrative had been built partly on her brother’s lies.
Again.
The truth was complicated.
Again.
But one thing changed that night.
Adrian arrived at the station.
Rebecca was there.
They stood across from each other.
“I don’t know what we do,” she whispered.
Adrian looked broken.
“We don’t do anything.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I loved you.”
“I loved you too.”
They were half-siblings.
There was no future as a couple.
But the past had been real to them.
Marcus watched from a distance.
No villain.
No punishment that fit.
Just two people hurt by secrets old enough to predate them.
Later Adrian approached Marcus.
“I’m leaving New York.”
“Where?”
“Seattle.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
Marcus nodded.
“What about Rebecca?”
Adrian looked toward her.
“She needs a brother more than she needs another man deciding her future.”
Marcus felt something tighten.
“That was almost wise.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
They hugged.
The next morning Thomas Hale’s name was officially cleared through newly uncovered evidence.
Adrian attended the announcement.
So did Rebecca.
They stood apart.
May you like
But when the statement was read, both cried for the same father.
And for the first time, the truth brought something back instead of only taking something away.
