Chapter 2 - The Perfect Lie

Elena had always been good at controlling a room.

She knew when to cry.

When to stay silent.

When to make people feel sorry for her.

And Marcus had seen that performance many times.

But tonight…

Something was different.

“Marcus,” Elena whispered, “please believe me.”

He looked down at her.

“I want to.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“But?”

Marcus looked toward the security camera.

“But I need to know everything.”

Adrian let out a slow breath.

“Finally.”

Elena looked at him.

“Finally what?”

“Finally someone is asking questions.”

Her expression hardened.

“You’re unbelievable.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You broke that table yourself.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“She threw the glass herself.”

Elena stared at him.

“You think I would hurt myself?”

“I think you’re capable of anything.”

The words changed the atmosphere instantly.

Marcus noticed.

There was history between them.

Something he didn’t know.

“What are you talking about?”

Neither answered.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“You two know each other.”

Adrian stayed silent.

Elena looked away.

That was enough.

Marcus’s stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

Adrian finally spoke.

“Ask her why she needed those documents.”

Elena’s face went pale.

“Don’t.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the first time Marcus saw Elena without an answer.

Only fear.

“I think we need to check the cameras,” Marcus said.

“No.”

The response came too fast.

Everyone froze.

Elena realized her mistake.

She quickly corrected herself.

“I mean… there’s no need. This is embarrassing enough.”

Marcus watched her carefully.

“You don’t want the footage?”

She swallowed.

“I just want this over.”

Marcus walked toward the security system.

“I don’t.”

He pressed the monitor button.

The screen turned on.

A recording appeared.

The timestamp showed:

8:43 PM

Everyone gathered around.

Elena stopped breathing.

The video loaded.

And the truth was about to appear.
