Chapter 30 - Sarah Found the Ring Before Marcus Asked

Sarah found the engagement ring in a kitchen drawer while looking for batteries.
Marcus walked in.
She held the box.
“This is disappointing.”
He froze.
“What?”
“You hid it next to AA batteries.”
“I panicked.”
“How long?”
“Four months.”
Sarah laughed.
“Why?”
“Every proposal idea sounded manipulative.”
“Good.”
“I considered the mansion.”
“No.”
“Exactly.”
“The courthouse?”
“Worse.”
“The camera room?”
She stared.
“I enjoy being alive.”
She opened the box.
Simple ring.
No family diamond.
No Whitmore heirloom.
“Why this one?”
“Because it has no history.”
Sarah’s face softened.
Marcus swallowed.
“I don’t want to promise you a life without secrets. People have private thoughts. Fear. Mistakes. I want to promise I will never use secrecy to control your choices.”
Sarah cried.
“Did you rehearse that?”
“Thirty-seven times.”
“Yes.”
He blinked.
“I didn’t ask yet.”
“You were taking too long.”
They laughed.

Then Marcus asked properly.
She said yes again.
