Chapter 25 - Catherine’s Last Weapon

Catherine lost the primary ownership case.

Not completely.

The court recognized Rebecca’s inherited interest and some Vale trust claims but refused to dismantle the entire company.

Catherine received settlement rights worth millions.

She rejected them.

Then she revealed her final weapon.

A video.

Richard Whitmore, recorded twenty-five years earlier.

He admitted he had ordered evidence fabricated against Thomas Hale.

Already known.

Then another admission.

He said Marcus’s mother had known.

Marcus froze.

His mother, Margaret Whitmore, had died ten years earlier.

He had worshipped her.

The video suggested she knew Rebecca was being removed from the family.

Knew Thomas was being framed.

Said nothing.

Marcus broke.

Not publicly.

At home.

Sarah found him sitting in the dark living room.

“I’m tired of finding out everyone I loved was compromised.”

She sat beside him.

“Then stop requiring dead people to be perfect.”

He looked at her.

“That’s harsh.”

“Yes.”

“Helpful?”

“Maybe tomorrow.”

Marcus cried.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

His mother had been kind to him.

She had also failed Rebecca.

Both true.

He called Rebecca.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“My mother.”

Rebecca was silent.

“She was kind to me once,” she said.

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

“When I lived here. She used to bring me hot chocolate after Richard yelled.”

“Why didn’t she save you?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Rebecca continued.

“I spent years wanting her to be evil because it would hurt less.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

People were complicated.

Again.

Catherine expected the video to turn Marcus against the family legacy.

Instead he released it himself.

Full.

Unedited.

He issued a statement acknowledging Margaret’s complicity.

Catherine was furious.

“You stole my leverage.”

Marcus replied, “Truth isn’t leverage if everyone can see it.”

That sentence ended something.

Catherine had spent decades weaponizing secrets.

Marcus made them public.

No more bargaining.

No more blackmail.

The Whitmore archive was transferred to an independent historical repository.

Researchers could access it.

Victims could petition records.

The mansion’s hidden room was emptied permanently.

Marcus removed the secret panel.

May you like

Not the camera.

The camera stayed.
