Chapter 47 - THE TRUSTI couldn't speak.
My daughter had never known about any trust.
Neither had I.
My mother explained that Eleanor had created the trust before disappearing.
She believed someone inside the family was stealing from the company.
The money had been placed in a protected account.
The beneficiary was a child who did not yet exist.
My daughter.
Sophie had been born years later.
But Eleanor had chosen her because she believed I would protect her.
I stared at my mother.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your father was watching.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Watching me?”
“Everyone.”
My mother placed a small key on the table.
It was identical to the key from the red envelope.
“There is a second safe.”
“Where?”
“At the Whitmore.”
My heart stopped.
“The hotel?”
My mother nodded.
“Eleanor hid the original documents there.”
I stared at her.
“Then why did Preston frame Sophie?”
My mother looked at me.
“Because he knew the trust existed.”
“And he wanted access to it.”
She shook her head.
