Chapter 42 - THE FILE WITH MY DAUGHTER'S NAMEThe file was hidden beneath the floorboards.
I found it because one of the boards looked newer than the others.
The label read:
SOPHIE HART — PROTECTION PLAN
I opened it.
The first page contained her name.
Her school.
Her medical history.
Her daily routine.
Her favorite playground.
Her usual route home.
My hands began to shake.
Someone had been tracking my daughter.
The next page contained photographs.
Sophie walking into school.
Sophie eating lunch.
Sophie sitting beside me at the park.
The final photograph had been taken the day before the wedding.
She was standing outside our apartment.
And someone had written beneath the image:
THE CHILD MUST BE PRESENT.
I felt sick.
The wedding had not been an accident.
Sophie had been brought there deliberately.
But why?
I turned the page.
At the bottom was a single sentence:
THE MOTHER MUST BE BLAMED.

Then I heard a sound behind me.
Someone was inside the house.
