Chapter 43 - THE PERSON IN THE HALLWAYI grabbed the nearest object I could find.

A heavy lamp.
The footsteps stopped.
Then someone spoke.
“Put it down.”
I recognized the voice.
Lauren.
Preston's bride.
She stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
“You followed me?”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
She looked at the file in my hand.
“I came to warn you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“After your wedding nearly destroyed my daughter?”
Lauren flinched.
“I didn't know what Preston was planning.”
“You stood there.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of him?”
She nodded.
Then she looked at the photographs.
“I thought he wanted to embarrass you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Lauren swallowed.
“Preston told me your mother had stolen something from his family.”
I stared at her.
“What did she steal?”
Lauren shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then she whispered:
May you like
“But whatever it was…”
“He believed your daughter was the key to getting it back.”
