Chapter 40 - MY MOTHER'S EMPTY HOUSEWhen I returned home, my mother's car was gone.

The front door was unlocked.
Inside, every drawer had been opened.
Every cabinet had been searched.
The house looked as if someone had been looking for something.
I called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then I noticed the dining table.
A single envelope sat in the center.
My name was written on it.
Not in my mother's handwriting.
In my father's.
I opened it.
Inside was a short message.
Your mother left before the police arrived.
Beneath it was an address.
An old house near the lake.
I recognized the location.
My father had owned it for years.
But he had never allowed anyone to visit.
I called Detective Morales.
He told me not to go alone.
But I already knew I would.
Because somewhere inside that house was the truth.
