Chapter 41 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKEThe house had been abandoned for years.

The windows were covered.

The garden had disappeared beneath weeds.

I entered through the side door.

The air smelled of dust and old wood.

For several minutes, I found nothing.

Then I heard a sound.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

I stopped.

“Mom?”

No answer.

I climbed the stairs.

At the end of the hallway was a locked room.

I tried the handle.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the red envelope from the wedding.

The one I had found hidden inside the hotel's bridal suite safe.

I had kept it in my purse.

Inside was a small brass key.

I had never understood what it opened.

Until now.

The key fit the lock.

The door opened.

The room was filled with boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

Old financial records.

And one large wall covered with photographs of my family.

My father.

My mother.

Preston.

Lauren.

And Sophie.

My daughter.

Someone had been watching us for years.

Then I noticed something terrifying.

Sophie’s photograph had been taken only three days before the wedding.
