Chapter 38 - THE CONVERSATION IN THE PARKING GARAGEDetective Morales told me the photograph had been taken by a security camera in the parking garage.

The camera had not been connected to the ballroom system.
That was why Preston had forgotten about it.
In the footage, my father and Preston stood beside a black sedan.
They were arguing.
I watched the video on the detective's laptop.
My father's face was tense.
Preston looked furious.
Then my father handed him the black device.
I paused the video.
“What is that?”
“A hotel access key,” Detective Morales said.
“Why would my father have one?”
“That is what we're trying to determine.”
I watched the footage again.
Preston said something.
My father shook his head.
Then Preston grabbed his arm.
My father pulled away.
The conversation appeared to become heated.
Finally, Preston walked away.
My father remained beside the car.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
I froze.
He had known.
He had known exactly where the camera was.
And he had smiled.
Not at the camera.
At someone standing behind it.
The detective paused the footage.
“Do you recognize the person?”
I stared at the screen.
The person was partially hidden.
But I knew the dress.
Green.
May you like
The woman from the ballroom.
The woman who had watched my daughter fall.
